California: $212K Income to Buy a Home

The numbers coming out of California’s housing market are striking: with a median home price hovering around $930,000, the income needed to be a competitive buyer is now estimated at $212,000 per year—nearly double the typical household income of $116,000. Even in strong job markets with steady salaries and diligent savers, we see families finding it harder to achieve homeownership. The Bay Area stands out even more, where a typical home is now close to $1.4 million, making ownership feel less attainable for many and, as some have put it, increasingly a luxury. Strategies like saving more, tackling debt, or considering homes further from core job centers can help, but the reality is that budgeting alone won’t bridge the full gap for many buyers. As realtors with decades of experience right here in the San Ramon Valley, we’ve watched affordability shift over time. Ultimately, the question of who California’s housing market serves is becoming more pressing—especially for working families who deserve a fair shot at homeownership.
